The era of Jacobean furniture introduced the chair to the world. Prior to the seventeenth century sitting was on stools, wood stools that were rough and hard. It was during this period that furniture styles changed and the beginning of a new era in comfort was begun.

King James I and King Charles I were rulers during the mid sixteen hundreds. Perhaps, as rulers they were looking for more comfort than had been afforded by earlier pieces of furniture. Although the furnishings were somewhat crude and clumsy adding a back to the stool was a major event in the development of furniture as we know it today.

Furniture Creations

The wood most used during the reigns of James I and Charles I was oak. It was often cut rather thickly and crudely. The seats on the stools were often flat and square. When the backs were added to make a more comfortable seat little more was done than to add another square of wood in a vertical position.

As the Jacobean style developed flat straight stretchers for bracing were replaced by turned stretchers. While the turned wood added no more support it did soften the look. The legs were occasionally turned to add to the style but the feet remained square.

According to the standards of today the creations from the mid-seventeenth century are uncomfortable and stiff. Upholstery was a rarity, but when a piece was upholstered most often the material was needlepoint. Even with upholstery applied over the solid wood frames there was not sufficient padding to make Jacobean furniture a style that has remained in favor through the decades.

There was a brief revival of the style in the nineteen thirties, but the large size and bulk along with the discomfort of seating caused the revival to disappear just as quickly as it had appeared.

The Jacobean Furniture Era Introduced the Chair

Miranda McAfee, who began her website career by writing about bedding has recently begun a website about furniture. Again, it was necessity that caused her to put her knowledge to work again. Her son and daughter-in-law came to her to ask advice on selecting furniture. Having spent years buying and selling antiques Miranda decided to begin with the history of furniture starting with the Jacobean furniture era.
